A Low Carbon Life | Post 4 2018 | Single Use Plastics
Early in the days of my concern about global warming, I found it hard to understand how some people could just focus on a single, climate change issue and that single issue was’single use plastics’. Now, I appreciate that plastics are an ecological disaster; that they are made from fossil fuels; and, that they are symbolic of our consumer society. Conversely, plastic is an amazing substance that I hope we will always be able to access because it is important in many settings, especially medicine, and because it can be made to be amazingly durable.
Thirty-five years ago, I adopted my first two pets and a friend gave me a plastic food bowl for each of them. Those beloved pets are now long dead and have others have been adopted but the food bowls, still used every day, live on so plastic can last. If we are lucky enough to be able to access it in the future, then it may well be scarce and expensive but it should also be durable.
Click on Plastic in our Lives to take you to an email I received that has lots of interesting information about single use plastics and the substitutes we can choose.
